Born: March 6, 1971 Santa Barbara, California.
Current location: Oakland, California.
Bio: Dan Romo works primarily in the third dimension. Be it cast bronze, carved wood, found object, forged steel, or gizmo optical lens gadgetry, his work always plays off a persistent dark and acrid sense of humor. Part carnivalesque, part somnambulant bliss, Dan Romo’s imagery can make you feel right at home and like you are on another planet simultaneously.
Dan Romo studied sculpture and film at UC Santa Cruz and San Francisco State University in the 90’s. After college Dan was an apprentice to a Blacksmith in Santa Cruz for a year and through the California Blacksmith’s Association, came to know many Smiths and metal sculptors, leading him to volunteering at the Yosemite Historical Center as the Village Blacksmith in the summers for 6 years.
Starting in 1994, Dan worked 8 years at Artworks foundry in Berkeley, CA where he further developed his skills throughout the bronze casting process. During his 7 years in the patina department, Dan worked shoulder to shoulder with several great contemporary sculptors such as Peter Voulkos, Stephen DeStaebler, and Robert Graham.
In 1998 Dan Romo became part of The City of Paris Studios in Oakland, CA, where several Bay Area sculptors worked like family in a communal sculpture studio. From there he started his business Studio Romo, which specializes in metal fabrication, sculpture services, restoration and patina.
Dan has also taught classes in patina at The Crucible, a non-profit school of industrial arts in Oakland, CA
